Royal Worcester Mugs

Royal Worcester China Mugs are divided into three design categories. Morris & Co mugs are based on designs from the Arts and Crafts movement of the 1880s. The company originally called Morris, Marshall, Faulkner & Co, was founded by artist and designer William Morris in collaboration with friends from the Pre-Raphaelites. William Morris’ profound influence on interior design in the early part of the 20th century has led him to be one of the most recognised textile designers in Britain. Here some of his iconic designs including Strawberry Thief are faithfully recreated on these Royal Worcester China Mugs in various colour combinations. Strawberry Thief was first designed by William Morris in 1883 and was based on the thrushes he saw stealing fruit from his garden in Oxfordshire. The Strawberry Thief design is available in Crimson / Slate, Indigo / Mineral and Chocolate / Slate. Other designs used from the William Morris Archives include Golden Lily in either Olive / Russet or Slate / Manila and Pimpernel also available in two different colour combinations. The licences to use William Morris Designs are held by Sanderson and a number of their own unique designs have also been incorporated into the Royal Worcester Mug Collection. The Sanderson name dates back to 1860 and its founder, Arthur Sanderson. Sanderson specialised in importing luxury French wallpapers into Britain and by 1862 was one of the largest dealers in foreign goods in Britain. By 1869 Sanderson began to create their own designs and the company was established as not only an importer but also a manufacturer of fine fabrics and wallpapers. In 1924 Sanderson received the Royal Warrant from George V as Purveyor of Wallpapers and Paints to the King. Although changing hands several times the Sanderson name and reputation for innovative design and quality, lives on to this day. The mugs in the collection are based on some of Sanderson’s most recognised designs such as Sanderson Etchings and Roses which is available in three colourways Empire Yellow, Pale Cobalt and Pale Coral and Sweet Bay in either Black and White or Red and Green. The third category of Royal Worcester Mugs are taken from the Wrendale Design Collection.
