The Spode Woodland pattern was first introduced in 1990, but is actually a combination of two older Spode designs. The rich brown floral border was borrowed from Spode's British Flowers pattern from the 1830's, and a Game Service pattern popular in the 1930's provided the inspiration for the hunting theme. The Woodland Dinner Plates and Salad Plates feature four game birds, Pheasant, Quail, Red Grouse and Wood Duck. Each Bird is depicted in its natural environment and each features both the male and female of the species. The Male Wood Duck on the Woodland Dinner Plate
has distinctive red and green markings while the female is a muted brown. The remaining items in the collection feature different motifs including a deer on the Woodland Soup Plate
and Rabbit on the Small Cereal Bowl
. Other game birds include the Snipe on the Bread and Butter Plate and lapwing on the Large Cereal Bowl.
