Caithness Glass was established in 1961 by Robin Sinclair. In its original premises in the far north of Scotland the company produced coloured vases and bowls in contemporary styles. In 1968 Caithness was awarded the Royal Warrant by the Queen Mother and one year later it produced its first Limited Edition Paperweight. The original paperweights were called the Planets and were an instant success. Today Caithness produces over 85 different Limited Edition Designs
with new creations added every year as existing collections are sold out. Some designs are limited to 250 and some as little as 15. The size of the edition is determined by the level of work required to create each study. The Unlimited Edition Collection
numbers about 170 different designs and although not limited by run size the range is refreshed each year to ensure that there is always something new to explore. The Unlimited Edition Collection also concentrates on producing gift orientated pieces. With collections such as Celebrate
which offers paperweights to commemorate 25th, 40th and 50th anniversaries along with pieces to celebrate weddings, births, and special occasions, Caithness make wonderful gifts. In 1995 Caithness moved and consolidated its paperweight operations to Perth. A few years later the company extended its range to include Art Glass
, a design led concept which introduced Sandcast Paperweights and Character Paperweights. From dogs to cats, Guinea Pigs to Penguins, Art glass does not just concentrate on the beautiful decoration of the glass so synonymous with Caithness, but also the form and structure of pieces. This new and contemporary range has extended Caithness’ appeal even further and the company, now part of the Dartington Group, continues to go from strength to strength.
