Waterford Crystal Irish Heritage
Waterford’s Irish Heritage Collection focuses on the traditional icons associated with Irish culture. Waterford was established in 1783 by brothers William and George Penrose in the heart of the Irish harbour town of Waterford. Thus an Irish legend was born and over 200 years later the company’s heart is still very much joined in Ireland. Waterford’s Irish Heritage range focuses on the Shamrock, Claddagh, Celtic designs and Harp. The Shamrock is a young sprig of clover which bears three leaves and has been a symbol of Christianity in Ireland since St Patrick. Now adopted as the national flower, in the same way as the rose is associated with England, the thistle Scotland and the Daffodil Wales, the Shamrock is deeply rooted in Irish culture. In the Waterford Irish Heritage Collection the Shamrock is available as a hand cooler in emerald green. The Claddagh motif is another symbol with its roots in Ireland. Said to symbolise love, loyalty and friendship, the ring was given by loves to represent their never ending love. The image originated in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, just outside of Galway, and includes two hand holding a heart topped with a crown. The Harp is part of the heraldic coat of arms for Ireland. Shown in gold against a deep blue background it has been associated with Irish Kings since the 13th century. Beautifully recreated in crystal, the harp sculpture is one of the beautiful pieces in Waterford’s Irish heritage Collection.
